With the perfect amalgamation of comfort and formality, it’s even more common for knitwear to be worked into formal outfits — whether for an important meeting at work or an evening soirée.

The problem is most men don’t know how to turn the humble jumper into something that can be worn formally.

But, there’s no need to worry. At Slater Menswear, we’ve covered everything you need to know about working knitwear into an outfit.

What makes good knitwear?

Other than the fact it’s a garment to keep us warm, knitwear is also an excellent opportunity to inject some personality and dimension into your look. But what are some of the do’s and don’ts of proper knitwear dressing?

Choose the correct fit

Whether you’re wearing it over a crisp white shirt or under a suit jacket, making sure your knitwear fits correctly is crucial.

If your jumper is too big, it can give an oversized appearance which isn’t typically appropriate for a formal occasion.

If the material is too tight, the knitwear will begin to pull over areas like the chest and stomach and bunch under the armpit guaranteeing an uncomfortable wear.

Opt for quality materials

Sometimes, there’s no better feeling than pulling on a jumper made of quality materials.

Lambswool, for example, is characterised by its fineness and softness that lends itself perfectly to sweaters and cardigans. It’s also generally less itchy compared to standard sheep's wool and has naturally water-repellent and moisture-wicking tendencies.

Merino wool is another excellent example, as it’s highly breathable, making it a great option for year-round wear.

Get the length right

At its shortest point, a jumper or sweater should hit past the bottom of a belt buckle but should be no longer than 5 cm past this point.

If your sweater or jumper is too long or short, you risk your outfit not looking appropriate for the occasion — suggesting you can’t adhere to a dress code.

Avoid garish prints and oversized logos

No matter the event that you’re attending, it’s crucial that you avoid garish prints and logos that sprawl across the chest.

A formal outfit should stick with a neutral palette of colours like grey, black and cream and have no logos or outlandish patterns. This way, your outfit looks sleek and clean and can be focused on as a whole rather than drawing attention to one specific area.

Find your most comfortable style

A wide range of jumpers, sweaters and cardigans offer a simple upgrade to your outfit. The key is finding what feels natural to you.

From crew neck jumpers to v-necks, knitted polos to half-zip collars, find the items of clothing that feel the most comfortable for you and go from there.

How to style knitwear for a formal occasion

For work

Baileys Crew Neck Lambswool Knitted Jumper - £45

Broadstone Bros Tailored Fit Herringbone Tweed Blazer - £69

Jack & Jones Emil Knitted Crew Neck Jumper - £25

Levi’s Original Fit 501 Straight Leg Jeans - £85

Incorporating knitwear into your usual work wardrobe is easier than it seems.

If you want to impress in a big meeting, make sure to keep the smart-casual ratio balanced by pairing your knitted jumper with a blazer and matching tailored trousers

There are also some minor details you can incorporate into your work look that is simple and effective. Fold back the end of the sleeve if it has ribbing; this is a smarter way to present yourself to the people around you.

For dinner

Jack & Jones Roll Neck Knitted Jumper - £28

Jack & Jones Slim Fit Brown Check Marco Connor AKM Chinos - £39

Performance Tailored Fit Plain Two Piece Suit - £145

Guthrie & Valentine Extra Fine Merino Wool Knitted V-Neck Jumper - £49

The key to nailing knitwear during an evening is to opt for a more streamlined shape.

Swap thicker knits like chunky cardigans with finer weaves in regular fits for a smart look that is perfect for any occasion where you don’t need to don a full blazer jacket and trousers.

Instead, look toward structured jeans with straight legs paired with a crisp white shirt and brogues.

For a formal party

Dubbed as a formal party staple, a roll-neck jumper is an effortless way to up the ante for the nighttime.

To avoid feeling underdressed, style a roll-neck with smart chinos — preferably with a subtle print to them, like check — and, if the occasion calls for it, trainers are acceptable. Make sure that there are no flashy prints or standout logos. The best option is a pair of white, hard-sole trainers; this way, it won’t draw attention away from the rest of the outfit.

A pair of smart shoes will suffice if trainers don’t comply with the dress code.

For a wedding

If you’re attending a wedding in the winter, chances are it’s going to be cold. If you don’t feel comfortable in a three-piece suit, then a two-piece combined with a v-neck jumper will add some warmth and extra formality to your look.
